Cord Spinning 1-Day Course

It's often difficult to find a really nice cord when you want to edge a cushion you have made yourself, or a chair you have upholstered in an exquisite fabric.  Whatever the availability on the market, the colours are often limited and never quite right, with the end product often falling short of your expectations.

Cords have a multiplicity of uses as piping, edgings and tie-backs in soft furnishings, upholstery, embroidery and jewellery. Exciting colour and construction effects can be achieved.

Decorative Cords

On this one-day course we will cover all the basic techniques for making 2, 3 and 4 strand twisted cords, using a simple and inexpensive gadget - a 4 hook cord-twister. You will discover a whole range of cord constructions, including cabled cord, and how to achieve the length and diameter you need for a specific project. You will also learn what happens to colour in cord making, and how to match shades to your favourite fabric.

We can supply cotton and linen yarns and cord-twisters, but please bring your own yarns if you wish. It is best to use a variety of colours, but in one type of yarn (mixing different types is tricky when starting out on cord spinning). The cost of materials if using ours will be around £3-£5 depending on the diameter and length of your cords.

For those of you working on a particular project and thinking of making cords to match your fabric, go to the website of GS UK Limited and buy your own yarns from their online shade cards. The type of yarn you need is Cotty 30 in 25g cops. If you are in doubt about which shade is the best match, by both! Mixing close colours suits fabrics well.
